چکیده

External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is considered to be one of the options to treat the prostate cancer. Due to advanced development in EBRT such as volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), it is possible to deliver conformal dose to the target while minimizing dose to the organs at risk (OAR). The VMAT can deliver modulated radiation beam with simultaneous adjustment of dose rate, gantry speed, and multi leaf collimator (MLC) field aperture [1]. In IMRT, radiation beam is either divided into smaller segments of differing MLC shape such as in the case of static IMRT or modulated by continuously moving MLC such as in the case of dynamic IMRT [1, 2]. A number of studies have reported the use of VMAT and IMRT for the prostate cancer. The purpose of this study is to review the current literature on VMAT and IMRT for prostate cancer. A literature search was conducted using PubMed and Google Scholar with keywords “prostate cancer”, “IMRT”, and “VMAT”.

Optimization of prostate cancer radiotherapy using of a spacer gel, volumetric modulated arc therapy and a single biological organ at risk objective

Background: The aim was to evaluate the benefit of technical advances for treatment planning: introduction of a hydrogel spacer, VMAT (volumetric modulated arc therapy) and a single biological organ at risk objective for the rectum and bladder. Initial standard was a step-and-shoot IMRT (intensity modulated radiotherapy) without a spacer and conventional organ at risk objectives.  Material...

Interpreting Radiation Treatment Planning Study Results: A Note of Caution

Email:[email protected] Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among males in the United States.1 The treatment of prostate cancer has several options, including external beam radiation therapy. The primary goal of radiation therapy is to control the tumor by delivering a maximum dose to the tumor site, yet minimizing the radiation dose to normal tissues. The development of...

A note on the Radiation Treatment Planning for the Prostate Cancer

Radiation therapy has been one of the major treatment modalities for the prostate cancer over the past few decades. Treatment planning system (TPS) is an integral component in radiation therapy in order to ensure the accurate estimation of radiation dose to the tumor. However, due to the variability in optimization techniques and beam modeling among various TPS, the current literature on radiat...

A retrospective planning analysis comparing intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) using two optimization algorithms for the treatment of early-stage prostate cancer

INTRODUCTION The primary aim of this study is to compare intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) to volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) for the radical treatment of prostate cancer using version 10.0 (v10.0) of Varian Medical Systems, RapidArc radiation oncology system. Particular focus was placed on plan quality and the implications on departmental resources. The secondary objective w...

Dosimetric comparison of intensity‐modulated radiotherapy and volumetric‐modulated arc radiotherapy in patients with prostate cancer: a meta‐analysis

Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) and volumetric-modulated arc therapy (VMAT) are two main radiotherapy techniques. The aim of this study is to explore which is the preferred technique in prostate treatment through the related publica-tions and meta-analysis. Two authors independently identified all relevant articles available regarding eligibility criteria on PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane...
